Kuala Lumpur, 22nd June 2011- It was a historical night to remember for Sungei Wang Plaza as the shopping mall was awarded the Awards of Excellence (Shopping Mall Category) by Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad bin Ismail, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur. The award was presented during the Kuala Lumpur Mayor’s Tourism Awards 2011 which was held last night at Shangri-La Hotel.
The Kuala Lumpur Mayor’s Tourism Awards was created to identify, recognise and reward the establishments and individuals who have strived to promote Kuala Lumpur as an international tourist destination. The Shopping Mall Category award is awarded to shopping and retail centres that contribute towards making KL a preferred shopping destination. Mall’s design, retail mix, operational and marketing excellence are part of the judging criteria.
The proud recipient of the award was none other than Mr Yong Kei Seng, Chairman of Council of Sungei Wang Plaza Management Corporation. He was quoted as saying, “It is a real honour and privilege to have been awarded with this distinguished Awards of Excellence (Shopping Mall Category) by the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur. I would also like to personally thank the Management and the Staff of Sungei Wang Plaza for making this possible. We are very proud to be given such recognition in the industry as one of the best shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur. Seeing Sungei Wang Plaza evolved since 1977 till today has really brought back many fond memories and life time achievement for the mall”. He further added that the mall will continue to strive further to promote KL as one of the preferred shopping destinations not only in Malaysia but the world.
Sungei Wang Plaza first opened its doors in 1977 and has been operating for 34 years. The mall will be celebrating its 35th year anniversary next year. Sungei Wang Plaza which literally means ‘River of Gold’ is located in the premier district of Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle, Bukit Bintang.With a gross built-up space of 1.26 million square feet and a net lettable area of 800,000 square feet, Sungei Wang Plaza consists of three split-level basement floors with 881 car park bays and another 389 parking bays at the rooftop car park spread over the fourth and fifth floors as well as seven commercial levels with over 800 retailers.
Sungei Wang Plaza was previously awarded Best Brands in Retail (Shopping Centre) 2007 & 2008 and also the Best Brands in Brand Strategy 2009 at the Brand Laureate Awards. The award recognises the best brands from Malaysia and Asia-Pacific and covers various industries and categories from multinationals to local, small and medium enterprises. Sungei Wang Plaza was selected based on key criteria which include brand strategy, identity and brand culture.
